Can I start a non-profit agency to raise funds for an ill family member?

My middle aged brother has cancer and little health insurance. If I want to get donations rolling, what is the best way to do this? I thought a non-profit would be good, but it seems like overkill. Any other ideas?

  1. You can start the ball rolling with setting up an organization to help out. Applying for a 501(c)3 can be a time consuming process, but you can do this even after you have the organization started. Check out the SS-4 on irs.gov. This forms gets you a tax id number from the fed, and will allow you to open a bank account. You may want to call the IRS for more information. I’m no professional but this may be a place to start.

  2. Have you call Danny Thomas ‘City of Hope in Arcadia California. They have all type of financial assistant for children with cancer. You could ask them if they know of any programs for adults who have cancer.

There is another hospital that they advertised on television for cancer people, you pay according to your income. I can not think of their name right now.
