How does a browser company make profit?

I mean, why would anyone start with Chrome, or Safari or Internet Explorer?

In what way can a company make profit with that?

Does anyone know?

Many thanks!

  1. They control the default start page.

They can charge people who want to make “tool bars” or “extensions” assuming their not open source.

They can build stuff into it that drives people to your search platform.

If your browser is widely adopted you hold have a certain amount of power over the web development community. I think this is a big one if your MS or google.
