Big oil made 11 billion profit, but paid 33 billion in tax.should they be taxed more?

Or should the Govt take less in taxes that we wind up paying for at the pump?
Above reflects 1/4 earnings/tax.
captainobvious_lj: you had me until you wrote “the point is mute” it’s “moot”…you now have zero credibility.

  1. You forgot to mention that most of that tax was paid to foreign countries because XOM gets a foreign tax credit for any foreign taxes it pays and because most of XOM’s income is earned in foreign countries.

  2. links please?

  3. Windfall profit taxes or increased oil taxes are only a cover for elitist Democrats to take more from the individual and run themselves. Elitists feel that they can run your lives better than you can yourself, so if you elect people who feel that way, don’t be surprised when that happens.

  4. No, one single oil company made $11.68 billion in profit for the quarter. And by profit that is after taxes, after expenses. And does it include the billions in subsides they are also receiving at tax payer expense?

  5. The Government should worry less about the size of Exxon Mobils profits and worry more about the citizens that are paying the high price of fuels because they won’t let our Oil companies drill at home.

  6. Not true…..

There is no way in hell they paid 33 billion in taxes during the second quarter of this year….

Especially considering they have never paid that much for income taxes in the companies history…..

  7. i dont know haow much taxes they paid, but i will guarantee you this: they didn’t pay all that they were supposed to. all that money can buy a lot top level accountants that do nothing but find ways to keep from paying taxes.

you would be amazed at the things that they write off as business expenses.

  8. ExxonMobil made a $12 billion profit IN ONE MONTH!!!
All oil companies pay $33 billion in taxes combined for the WHOLE YEAR!
You’re a liar. Get your facts straight.

  9. no ceaser YOU need to get your facts straight

  10. Why not, they mst be evil if they make a big profit.

  11. THATS WHY YOU HAVE TO VOTE DEMOCRAT YOU FEMALE DOG. GET WITH THE PROGRAM MCCAIN IS ALL FOR OIL BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISE’S.

  12. We should consider the amount of investment dollars and their rate of return on their investment. The rate of return on each dollar spend is actually rather low.

We should consider the fact that this is a captialist country for at least a few more years. Many people say it is all about profits; as if that is something bad. I am quite sure ALL the employees and ALL the investors want profits, so they can have a bright future.
I would rather leave the oil companies along when it comes to taxes (except something does need to be done about Corporation officers high benefit packages and the compensation for Board of Directors), because I perfer knowing I can still buy gas at the pump. I remember when you could not buy more than 5 gallons of gas every two days. I remember ther long gas lines when a gas station had gas. I remember having to drive miles just to find a gas station that had gas. I do not want to see those days again.

It just don’t make sense to tax any company to the point it stops doing business in the United States. I am quite sure many countries would welcome our oil companies.
It reminds of the issue taxing cigarettes in New York State. The state has increased cigarette taxes to the point that their actual revenues from cigarettes have almost dried up. People cross state lines to buy the product or buy them on the black market.

  13. No. captainobvious_lj has it right: 3 to 1 payout. Well done!
