How large will the windfall profit tax on big oil be in 2009?

when they pass the new law?

Someone told me they could collect easily 10 billion dollars from this one tax alone.

  1. It doesn’t matter, if they do you won’t see a cent of it. You’ll just pay through the nose for gas because the oil companies sure as hell won’t pay for it either. Any revenue that is generated will simply be squandered by the politicians on pork barrel spending as it always is.

  2. 10 billion? Isn’t that about 25% of Exxon’s profits for one quarter while they were gouging us? I think they should make them sell us gas for 1.00 a gallon for 10 years instead.

  3. With refining margins negative at the moment, and the price of oil dropping like a rock, they will have a hard time finding a “windfall” profit to tax! But. of course, everyone who knows anything knew that all along.

But, in the interest of fairness, when the oil companies are losing money (yes, it does happen) I’m sure you will all be supporting a subsidy to help them continue on?
