The purpose of any corporation is to make make the most profit that it can. So are they crooks? No. But they are pretty cutthroat about things. If you’re dying from something that isn’t technically covered by the plan, it’s not their problem.
Yes. They are businesses. They are in a large part publicly held companies and, therefore, responsible to their shareholders. They are not charities and they are not government entities. They are not, on the other hand, inherently evil, either. They may just seem so because they base decisions on their business models and not on what is right for humanity.
Yes, they are in the business of making money.
As a physician, I frequently have to fight to collect fees that insurance companies owe. They make us jump through hoops unnecessarily, in an effort to delay or avoid payment.
Some are worse than others.
Fortunately, I am not in a specialty where insurance companies dictate which drugs I can use and how I can treat my patients.
